Protective Caps for Gauges – Impact, Splash & Transport Protection
Protective caps shield mechanical and digital pressure gauges against impacts, scratches, dirt, moisture and UV exposure. Depending on the use case you can choose rubber shock-absorbing sleeves for handheld/panel devices, thread protection caps for process connections (G 1/4, G 1/2, NPT), front/window covers and dust caps for storage and transport.
Materials include NBR/silicone (grippy, shock damping), TPU/PA (abrasion resistant) and PE/PP (transport caps). On request, ICS Schneider Messtechnik supplies color-coded variants, custom embossing/labels and pre-assembled sets with gauge, cock/snubber and cap.
FAQ on Protective Caps for Gauges
Selection, materials, sizing, installation and care—for long-lasting, clearly readable field indicators.
Why should I use a protective cap on a gauge?
It reduces shock and vibration damage, protects against splashes and dust and prevents window scratching during operation, transport and storage.
Which types of caps exist?
- Rubber sleeves (NBR/silicone) for handheld/digital gauges, often with grip texture.
- Front/window covers (TPU/PC film) for splash and scratch protection.
- Thread & dust caps for process connections (BSPP/NPT/metric)—for storage/transport.
- Splash guards to enhance the gauge’s front IP protection.
Which material fits my application?
| Material | Temperature (typ.) | Properties | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBR | -20…+100 °C | Shock damping, oil resistant | Industry, hydraulics/pneumatics |
| Silicone | -40…+200 °C | Soft, heat resistant, food-grade options | Food/pharma, higher temperatures |
| TPU | -30…+80 °C | Abrasion resistant, clear/translucent possible | Front/window protection, outdoor |
| PE/PP | -10…+60 °C | Low cost, lightweight | Transport/storage caps |
How do I determine the correct size?
Measure the case diameter (e.g., 63/100/160 mm) or the thread/connection size (G 1/4, G 1/2, 1/4″ NPT, M20×1.5). Manufacturer sizing usually refers to the dial nominal diameter or the thread standard.
Does a cap affect readability?
No. Caps with a clear window or open viewing area maintain readability. Anti-glare, matte windows help minimize reflections.
Will a protective cap increase the IP rating?
Sometimes. Splash guards can improve the front IP situation. The overall device IP still depends on the gauge design.
Are protective caps suitable for hazardous areas?
Only if the complete assembly (device + accessory) is appropriately approved. Use antistatic/ESD-safe materials as required.
Can I color-code protective caps?
Yes—color coding helps identify measuring points (e.g., medium, pressure range, calibration status).
How do I install a rubber sleeve?
- Clean and dry the device.
- Stretch the sleeve evenly over the case (avoid twisting).
- Center the viewing window; keep labels/markings visible.
How should I care for protective caps?
Clean with mild detergents; avoid harsh solvents (check material compatibility). Inspect UV-exposed caps regularly for embrittlement.
Will a cap prevent glass breakage?
It reduces risk from minor impacts but does not replace a protective guard/cage for severe mechanical loads.
Compatible with diaphragm seals/snubbers/cooling elements?
Yes—caps mainly cover the case/front. Process-side accessories remain unaffected; verify fit on large assemblies.
Does a cap influence calibration?
No. It does not change the measurement chain. The cap may remain installed during calibration if the display is unobstructed.
Are anti-reflection or chemical-resistant windows available?
Yes—AR-coated or chemical-resistant windows (PC/PET/PMMA) can be supplied.
When should I replace a cap?
When you see cracks, embrittlement, warped windows or chemical attack. At the latest, replace during scheduled maintenance.
Does ICS Schneider offer pre-assembled solutions?
Yes—ready-to-use measuring points with cap, gauge, cock/snubber, incl. labeling and documentation.
Can caps be printed or embossed?
On request with logo/ID embossing or laser/pad printing (material-dependent).
Tips for outdoor applications
- Select UV-stable materials (silicone/TPU).
- Add drain features to prevent water accumulation.
- Schedule periodic inspection and cleaning.
