Biogas Plants Photovoltaic systems Wind turbines Geothermal power plants
The importance of renewable energy sources for a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy supply is steadily increasing. In times where moving away from fossil fuels has become essential, alternative forms of energy such as solar, wind, water, and biomass energy are increasingly coming into focus. They form the foundation of a successful and future-oriented energy transition and represent a sector with dynamic growth potential. The challenges within this industry are as diverse as the range of renewable energy sources: from the need to ensure operational safety in wind turbines through precise monitoring of hydraulic systems, cooling of generators, or oil cooling of transformers, to the specific requirement for highly resilient components in hydroelectric power plants, the demands for the highest purity standards in solar panel construction, and the resistance to seawater in wave power plants, to special requirements regarding cleanability and corrosion resistance in biogas plants. This diversity underscores the need to develop tailored and innovative solutions that enable efficient, reliable, and sustainable utilization of renewable energy sources, thereby making a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and protecting the environment.

▷ Biogas Plants
Process instrumentation and analytics in biogas plants play a crucial role in renewable energy generation. Efficient operation and profitability of biogas plants are essential aspects that can be significantly improved through the use of advanced measurement technologies. Precise control and monitoring of process parameters using modern measurement and analysis systems are essential for maximizing biogas production and ensuring sustainable operation.
From compact units to extensive complexes with gas treatment and grid injection, comprehensive and detailed capturing of process data is indispensable. Early and thoughtful planning of instrumentation and analytics supports sustainable economic success.
Various measurement solutions are required for operating a biogas plant, covering all phases of the process: from biomass feedstock, through power generation in cogeneration plants, to injection of treated gas into the natural gas grid. Continuous data on temperature, flow rate, level, pressure, and gas composition are essential for process monitoring and optimization.
The selection of instrumentation and analytics directly impacts the effectiveness of the plant. Devices must not only convince through robustness, durability, and user-friendliness, but also ensure efficient supply of spare parts. Close collaboration with an experienced supplier already in the planning phase helps to find the ideal measurement method for every requirement and effectively reduce operating costs.
For example, choosing between radar and ultrasonic technology for level measurement results in different cost efficiencies and reliabilities of measurement values. A detailed evaluation of the respective advantages and disadvantages of available methods is crucial to determine the best possible solution. A reliable partner with comprehensive process and instrumentation knowledge is invaluable for effectively addressing challenges and optimizing biogas production.

- Highly cost-effective because calibration gases are not required (AUTOCAL with ambient air, depending on the measuring component)
- High selectivity due to multilayer detectors e.g. low cross-sensitivity to water vapor
- Cleanable cuvettes: Cost savings through further use in case of contamination
- Menu-guided operation in plain text
- Open interface architecture (RS 485, RS 232; PROFIBUS, SIPROM GA): Simplified process integration; remote operation and control

▷ Photovoltaic Systems
The increasing focus on renewable energy sources has led to a significant rise in the installation of photovoltaic systems on the roofs of residential and commercial properties. Due to their constant exposure to external influences, solar cells, modules, and their associated electronic components need continuous monitoring to ensure their efficiency and functionality.
Factors such as installation defects, extreme weather conditions, and natural wear and tear can lead to component impairments, which in turn diminish the energy efficiency of the system. Infrared thermography is an effective tool for identifying and diagnosing such issues as it enables rapid, accurate, and non-contact detection of heat patterns.
Enhanced monitoring and maintenance for maximum performance of solar parks
Especially for extensive solar installations like solar parks, careful and regular inspection is of paramount importance. Even minor disruptions, such as that of a single solar module, can have a negative impact on the productivity of the entire system. Infrared thermography provides a valuable advantage here by allowing effective identification of thermal irregularities across large areas without the need for direct or invasive testing.
Furthermore, the technology aids in preventive maintenance by detecting and addressing potential sources of errors early on before they escalate into serious issues. This not only ensures the safety of the installations but also helps maximize energy yield and extend the lifespan of the solar panels. The ability to monitor large areas quickly and comprehensively while considering the intensity of sunlight makes solar thermography an indispensable tool for photovoltaic system operators to maintain efficient operation and keep maintenance costs low.

▷ Wind Turbines
Wind turbines are key components in the global transition to renewable energy sources. Their efficiency, safety, and longevity depend significantly on the precision and reliability of the measurement and testing technology employed. Modern wind turbines incorporate a variety of sensors and measurement systems that continuously monitor critical operational parameters.
Central measurements include wind speed and direction, crucial for turbine alignment and energy yield optimization. Vibration sensors on the tower, nacelle, and rotors detect irregularities in operation early on, which could indicate wear or damage. Strain gauges on the rotor blades monitor stress and flexion to prevent material fatigue and ensure aerodynamic efficiency.
Pressure measurements in the hydraulic system, used for blade adjustment and emergency braking systems, ensure the flawless operation of these safety-critical components. Temperature sensors monitor the operating temperatures of generators, gearboxes, and bearings to avoid overheating and resulting damage.
Continuous monitoring of these parameters enables predictive maintenance, minimizing unplanned downtime and maximizing the lifespan of the turbines. Advanced analysis methods and data management tools analyze the collected data in real-time to optimize operational decisions and increase the overall efficiency of wind turbines.
Through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, measurement and testing data can also be remotely monitored and controlled, revolutionizing the maintenance and operation of wind turbines. This allows operators to monitor entire wind farms, conduct performance analyses, and make adjustments as needed to maximize energy yield, all from a centralized location.

▷ Geothermal Power Plants
Geothermal and ambient heat represent two significant renewable energy sources increasingly utilized for heating, cooling, and electricity generation purposes. Effectively harnessing and utilizing these energy sources requires precise measurement and testing technologies to maximize system efficiency, minimize operating costs, and reduce environmental impacts.
Geothermal energy harnesses heat from the Earth’s interior. Temperature monitoring plays a crucial role as the efficiency of geothermal plants directly depends on the temperature difference between the Earth’s surface and deeper layers. Highly precise temperature sensors and data loggers are employed to measure the temperature profile along the boreholes. This data aids in assessing the geothermal potential of a region and determining the optimal operating conditions for heat pumps and steam turbines for power generation.
Ambient heat, often utilized through air-to-water or air-to-air heat pumps, also requires accurate temperature measurements to optimize heat transfer efficiency. Sensors measure the outdoor temperature, humidity, and the temperature of the heat source or thermal storage. Pressure sensors also monitor the pressure in the refrigerant circuits, which is essential for maintenance and fault diagnosis of heat pump systems.
For both applications, flow meters are crucial, measuring the flow rate of heat transfer fluids (such as water or a mixture of water and antifreeze). This data is important for minimizing heat losses and maximizing energy transfer efficiency.
Pressure sensors contribute to monitoring the integrity of system components by measuring the pressure in pipelines, storage tanks, and other system parts. This information is critical for preventive maintenance and early detection of leaks or other potential issues.
Moisture sensors are particularly important in the use of ambient heat to monitor and control the efficiency of dehumidification processes employed in some air conditioning applications.
Overall, efficient utilization of geothermal and ambient heat requires comprehensive monitoring and control systems supported by advanced measurement and testing technology. These technologies enable optimal adjustment of operating parameters to achieve maximum energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
