Mobile machinery such as excavators, wheel loaders, tractors, municipal vehicles or mobile cranes operate under extremely demanding conditions: strong vibrations, shock loads, high pressures in the hydraulics, large temperature fluctuations and a harsh environment with dust, dirt and moisture. At the same time, the requirements for availability, safety and efficiency are increasing.

With pressure sensors, pressure transmitters and temperature sensors from WIKA, ICS Schneider Messtechnik offers powerful and field-proven measurement technology for mobile machinery. The sensors are specifically designed for mobile hydraulics and off-highway applications, withstand pressure spikes, comply with common interface standards such as CANopen® and SAE J1939, and provide reliable measurement values throughout the entire service life of the machine.

As a specialist distributor and consulting partner, ICS Schneider Messtechnik GmbH supports OEMs, machine manufacturers and operators in selecting the appropriate WIKA sensors – from simple pressure monitoring to networked, digital condition monitoring of complete hydraulic systems in mobile machinery.

Application areas in mobile machinery

Mobile machinery places particularly high demands on its sensor technology. Pressure, temperature, level and inclination must be reliably recorded at all times in order to control hydraulic systems, protect engines and ensure safety functions. The measurement technology from WIKA is used in a wide variety of mobile machines and helps manufacturers build robust and efficient systems.

  • Construction and earthmoving machinery: excavators, wheel loaders, tracked vehicles, compactors, concrete pumps
  • Agricultural and forestry machinery: tractors, harvesters, forestry cranes, felling machines
  • Municipal equipment: refuse vehicles, sweepers, winter service vehicles, aerial work platforms
  • Mining and heavy-duty vehicles: dump trucks, drilling rigs, underground vehicles
  • Industrial trucks and logistics machines: forklifts, telehandlers, reach stackers
  • Crane and lifting systems: mobile cranes, loader cranes, telescopic platforms, work platforms

All these machines use hydraulic, pneumatic or electrohydraulic systems that require precise measurement values to operate safely and reliably. The robust WIKA sensors provide the ideal foundation for this: vibration-resistant, corrosion-resistant and designed for extreme environmental conditions.

Key measurement parameters in mobile machinery

For mobile machinery to operate safely, efficiently and reliably, key physical parameters must be continuously monitored. Especially in hydraulic systems, engines, gearboxes and fuel circuits, precise sensors play a decisive role. The measurement technology from WIKA enables stable values even under shock, vibration, pressure spikes and harsh environmental conditions.

Parameter Importance Typical application areas
Pressure Control and monitoring of hydraulic systems; protection against overload and system faults Hydraulic circuits, brake pressure systems, steering hydraulics, suspension
Temperature Thermal protection of components; efficiency improvement through optimal operating temperatures Hydraulic oil, engine oil, gearbox, cooling circuit
Level Prevents dry running, failures and damage; monitoring of safety-relevant media Fuel tank, AdBlue tank, hydraulic oil tank
Inclination & acceleration Increases operational safety through stable machine positioning and accurate position detection Aerial work platforms, mobile cranes, forestry machines, agricultural equipment
Force & displacement Precise motion control for lifting, rotating and linear movements Hydraulic cylinders, actuators, steering mechanisms

The right combination of these measurement parameters forms the basis for modern control and safety functions in mobile machinery. Thanks to their robust design and high resistance to vibration, WIKA sensors are ideally suited for demanding off-highway applications.

Typical challenges in mobile machinery & how modern sensor technology solves them

Mobile machinery operates under extreme conditions. Vibrations, dirt, high pressures, rapid temperature changes and demanding safety requirements call for measurement technology that remains precise and fail-safe over time. Our wide range of sensors, switching devices, transmitters and industrial electronics provides reliable solutions for each of these challenges.

1. High pressures & extreme pressure spikes in hydraulic systems

Hydraulic circuits in excavators, loaders, tractors or cranes generate significant pressure loads. Pressure spikes can quickly damage sensors – modern pressure sensors are therefore specially damped and overload-resistant.

  • Robust stainless-steel measuring cells and reinforced housings
  • Optional pressure spike damping
  • Measuring ranges up to >1,000 bar
  • Active temperature compensation for stable readings

2. Strong vibrations & shock loads

Mobile machines generate continuous vibrations. Sensor technology and electronics must therefore be mechanically decoupled, potted or designed with vibration protection.

  • Vibration-resistant designs for off-highway vehicles
  • Shock-resistant electronic modules and transmitters
  • Robust connectors for reliable operation

3. Dust, moisture & high-pressure cleaning

Externally mounted sensors are frequently exposed to water, oil and dirt. The highest protection classes and corrosion-resistant materials are therefore essential.

  • Protection classes up to IP68/IP69K
  • Corrosion-resistant stainless-steel or plastic housings
  • Hermetically sealed measuring systems

4. Large temperature fluctuations

Mobile machinery often operates at −30 °C in winter and +80 °C in the engine compartment – sensors must cover this entire range.

  • Temperature ranges from −50 to +180 °C
  • Fast response times for safety functions
  • Thermally decoupled sensor housings

5. Precise positioning & safety of lifting and driving systems

Inclination and position sensors are used in cranes, work platforms, agricultural and forestry machinery to ensure safety and stability.

  • Inclinometers for platform and crane monitoring
  • Displacement sensors and linear potentiometers for cylinder movement
  • Force sensors for load measurement and overload protection

6. Tank monitoring & media management

Fuel, hydraulic oil or AdBlue must be safely monitored. Various level and pressure sensors are available for this.

  • Magnetostrictive level sensors
  • Float switches and capacitive sensors
  • Pressure-based level measurement for closed tanks

7. Modern digital communication & networking

Many machines today use connected control systems. Our transmitters, displays and interface modules support the most important industrial communication protocols.

  • CANopen®, SAE J1939, IO-Link, Modbus
  • 4–20 mA, 0–10 V, HART
  • Edge modules and digital displays

By combining robust sensor technology, flexible signal options and durable electronics, failures can be reduced, maintenance intervals extended and safety functions reliably implemented.

The position sensor HySense® PO 180 works on the measuring wire principle. It can be easily mounted and does not need linear guiding. At the measuring wire principle, a specially manufactured and calibrated wire is tightly wound around a high-precision drum that is driven against the pulled direction by a spring motor. Through the detection of the winding process the sensor converts the linear movement into an electrical signal. All mechanical and electronic components are protected by a solid casing. It is available for several measurement ranges from 0-3000 mm. Areas of application could be e. g.: Load cranes Hydraulic presses Your benefit at a glance: Compact High resolution and accuracy High dynamic Insensitive to environmental influences
