An isolation amplifier is a signal converter that provides galvanic separation between the input and output circuit, allowing secure and interference-free signal transmission even at differing ground potentials. Although called “amplifier,” it does not necessarily increase signal amplitude — the essential purpose is safe isolation and reliable transmission. Isolation amplifiers are indispensable in industrial measurement, control and automation systems when ground loops, different potentials, electromagnetic interference or safety requirements prevent a direct connection.
Modern isolation amplifiers often include an isolated supply (floating ground) and use methods such as opto-electronic coupling, capacitive or inductive coupling, or high-frequency transformer coupling to decouple input and output. This enables reliable transmission of small or low-level signals — like 0/4…20 mA or 0…10 V standard signals — without interference from common-mode voltages or noise.

What is an isolation amplifier?
