Digital Panel Meters for Resistance Measurement
Digital panel meters with resistance input measure the electrical resistance of a connected resistor, transducer or sensor, and display the value on a multi-digit LED display. They are designed for panel mounting in control cabinets, generally feature front protection up to IP65, and allow freely scalable readout. This enables direct reading of resistance values or conversion to a desired unit (e.g. temperature, position, etc.), depending on the application and sensor type used.
Questions & Answers
What is the purpose of resistance panel meters in control cabinets?
They are used to directly measure resistance — for example of sensors, resistive elements, measuring bridges or circuit components. This allows checking component integrity or evaluating sensors based on resistance output.
Which resistance ranges can typically be measured?
Depending on the device, low to moderate resistance values are measurable — typically ranging from a few ohms up to several kiloohms. The exact measurement range must be verified for the chosen device.
How is the resistance displayed?
The measured resistance is shown directly in ohms (Ω). Through configurable scaling, the meter can also display converted or derived quantities if a sensor maps resistance to a physical parameter.
Is scaling to other physical units possible?
Yes — if a sensor or transducer translates resistance into a physical magnitude (e.g. temperature, position, strain), the meter can be scaled so that the display shows the corresponding physical unit instead of ohms.
What display characteristics are common?
Multi-digit LED displays are used, often with digit heights around 10 mm or 14 mm. Available LED colors typically include red, green or orange to visually distinguish measurement points.
Are analog or relay outputs available?
Depending on the model, analog outputs such as 0/4–20 mA or 0–10 V may be provided to forward the measured resistance or scaled value to controllers or data acquisition systems. Relay outputs are less common but may be available in certain variants.
What supply voltages are typically required?
Common supply options are 24 VDC (galvanically isolated) or universal supplies such as 100–240 VAC, depending on the device version.
How is configuration carried out?
Configuration is done via a front keypad. Adjustable parameters typically include measurement range, scaling, display unit, decimal point and — if available — analog/relay output behavior. No need to open the cabinet.
When is using a resistance meter appropriate?
Such meters are appropriate when direct resistance measurement is required — for verifying sensors, resistive components or measuring cards — or when a resistance-based sensor is used and its output should be displayed or processed further.
What panel cut-out sizes are typically available?
These devices are designed for standard panel cutouts — depending on display size and features typically 48×24 mm, 72×36 mm or 96×48 mm.
