Large-Digit Displays with PROFIBUS-DP Interface

Large-digit displays with PROFIBUS-DP combine oversized LED numerals with digital fieldbus communication. They present measurement values in highly visible form — often with digit heights of several centimeters — while simultaneously transmitting these values digitally over the PROFIBUS-DP bus to higher-level control or monitoring systems. This makes them ideal for production halls, assembly lines, test stations or distributed installations where values must be clearly visible locally and centrally available at the same time.

Questions & Answers

Where are large PROFIBUS-enabled displays used?

They are used wherever process values must be clearly readable from a distance and also transmitted digitally to a PLC or control system — for example in production halls, automated lines, test benches or energy distribution systems.

What are the advantages of a PROFIBUS-DP connection?

With PROFIBUS-DP, measurement values, diagnostics and device status can be captured centrally. Wiring effort is reduced because multiple devices communicate over the same bus line.

How large are the typical digit heights?

Depending on the model, digit heights range from several centimeters up to very large displays designed for long-distance readability, often visible from 20–30 m or more.

Which types of signals can be displayed?

Depending on the device version, input signals may include current loops, voltage signals, temperature sensors, resistive sensors or other signal types. Values are shown locally and provided digitally via PROFIBUS.

How is the PROFIBUS address configured?

The bus address is set during commissioning and uniquely identifies the device in the network. This allows the control system to access and read the display reliably.

Are diagnostic or status messages available?

Yes — the device can transmit measurement values, operating states, warnings and error conditions via the bus, supporting advanced monitoring and maintenance.

How is scaling of the displayed values handled?

Units, decimal point and scaling factors are configured through the front interface or via the PROFIBUS master. This allows nearly any physical unit to be represented correctly.

Where are these displays particularly useful?

They are ideal for large production areas, locations where multiple people need to see the values simultaneously, and energy or process monitoring in halls, control rooms or electrical installations.

What supply voltages are commonly used?

Typical supply options include 24 VDC or wide-range AC inputs (e.g. 100–240 VAC), depending on device model and LED power requirements.

How is the device configured?

Configuration is performed via the front keypad or remotely through the PROFIBUS master. Adjustable parameters include bus address, scaling, units, brightness, filtering and optional alarm functions.
