Digital pressure gauges / test gauges
Digital pressure gauges – often also called test gauges – are electronic pressure measuring instruments for precise, easy-to-read measurements in service, laboratory, and plant operations. They reliably measure gases and liquids, cover mbar to bar ranges, and simplify testing, commissioning, and maintenance tasks with additional functions such as Min/Max/Peak, Tare/Zero, or data logging.
What is a digital pressure gauge (test gauge)?
A digital pressure gauge converts the applied pressure into an electrical signal and displays the value digitally. Test gauges are variants with particularly high accuracy and stability, e.g., for calibration and reference tasks.
Typical applications
-
Maintenance & service: tightness checks, leak tests, documenting pressure profiles
-
Lab & quality assurance: reference measurements, test benches
-
Process & plant operation: monitoring, switching functions, limit alarms
-
HVAC, pneumatics, hydraulics: commissioning, troubleshooting, parameter setting
Key selection criteria
-
Measuring range & overrange: matched to the process (mbar to several hundred bar)
-
Accuracy: e.g., 0.5% FS for service up to ≤ 0.1% for test tasks
-
Process connection: e.g., G ¼ (widely used)
-
Media compatibility: stainless steel (e.g., 316L) for corrosive media
-
IP rating & robustness: IP65/67, stainless-steel housing, shock-resistant
-
Display & operation: backlight, rotatable display, Tare/Zero
-
Signals & interfaces: PNP switching output, 4–20 mA / 0–10 V, optionally USB/Bluetooth
-
Power supply: battery or mains/24 V
-
Documentation: factory or DAkkS calibration certificate (on request)
Functions & options
-
Min/Max/Peak hold, data logger, limit alarm
-
Temperature compensation for more stable readings
-
ATEX variants (model-dependent) for hazardous areas
Service & calibration
For repeatably accurate results, we recommend regular calibration intervals. On request, we supply instruments with a factory or DAkkS calibration certificate and advise on the appropriate calibration chain. As an ISO 9001:2015–certified specialist distributor, we support you with selection, documentation, and integration into your process.
FAQ – Digital pressure gauges / test gauges
What is the difference between a digital and a test gauge?
A digital pressure gauge displays pressure electronically. A test gauge is a particularly high-accuracy version for testing, reference, and calibration tasks.
What accuracy do I need?
For service/maintenance, ≤ 0.5% FS is often sufficient. For testing and reference tasks, we recommend ≤ 0.1% or better—depending on the process and tolerances.
How do I choose the right measuring range?
The nominal range should cover the typical operating pressure and provide overrange capacity. Ranges that are too large reduce resolution; ranges that are too small risk overload.
Are digital pressure gauges suitable for gases and liquids?
Yes, provided media compatibility and the process connection are suitable. Stainless-steel sensing elements are universal; for special media, please verify material compatibility.
Which process connections are common?
In industry, usually G ¼ (BSPP). Other threads (e.g., G ½, NPT) are available depending on the model.
What do IP ratings (e.g., IP65/IP67) mean?
They indicate dust and water protection. IP65 is protected against water jets; IP67 is temporarily waterproof (immersion).
Do I need temperature compensation?
For precise applications with changing ambient temperatures, temperature compensation improves measurement stability.
What are Min/Max/Peak functions for?
They capture load peaks or pressure spikes—useful in leak tests, pressure surges, or dynamic processes.
Are switching outputs or analog signals available?
Many models provide PNP switching outputs as well as 4–20 mA or 0–10 V for connection to PLCs, data loggers, or control systems.
Can I record measurement data?
Yes, instruments with a data logger store measurement series internally; depending on the model, export via USB/Bluetooth or software is also possible.
How long does a battery charge last?
Depends on display, backlight, and logging. Typically several months in normal use; mains/24 V supply is often optional.
Is use in hazardous areas possible?
ATEX-compliant variants are available (model-dependent). Observe the appropriate zone classification.
How often should calibration be performed?
Commonly every 12 months; for critical processes, frequent load changes, or compliance requirements, possibly shorter.
Factory vs. DAkkS calibration—what’s the difference?
Factory calibration follows manufacturer specifications. DAkkS calibration is traceable to national standards and audit-proof per ISO/IEC 17025.
Are digital pressure gauges shock- and vibration-resistant?
Industrial instruments feature robust housings; check shock resistance and IP rating in the specifications.
Can I use the instrument as a reference?
Yes, test gauges with high accuracy and a certificate are suitable as a reference for comparison measurements.
Which display features are useful?
Backlight, a rotatable display, large digits, and unit switching (mbar/bar/psi) improve readability.
Is a digital pressure gauge suitable for leak tests?
Yes—ideal are instruments with high resolution, a stability indicator, and data logging for documenting pressure drops.
What role does overrange capacity play?
Sufficient overrange protects the sensing element from damage due to pressure spikes and extends service life.
Do I receive a calibration certificate with delivery?
On request, we supply a factory or DAkkS certificate—order it with the instrument so it’s ready for audit use immediately.
Can I integrate the gauge into existing PLC/SCADA systems?
With an analog output (4–20 mA/0–10 V) or suitable interfaces, integration into existing systems is straightforward.
Which environmental conditions must be observed?
Observe the specified temperature range, humidity, IP rating, and, if applicable, EMC requirements in the datasheet.
