Siemens Electromagnetic Flow Measurement – Field Devices for Process Automation
Electromagnetic flowmeters (also called MID – magnetic inductive flowmeters) from Siemens measure the volumetric flow of electrically conductive liquids in a contactless, wear-free way. The measuring tube is surrounded by an externally generated magnetic field: when a conductive fluid flows through, a voltage is induced across electrodes proportional to the flow velocity. MID are particularly suited for water, wastewater, chemical solutions, slurries or suspensions. They offer high accuracy, stable measurements under varying conditions and low maintenance, while being easy to integrate into automation systems.
Questions & Answers on Siemens Electromagnetic Flow Measurement
How does an electromagnetic flowmeter work?
The measuring tube is subjected to a magnetic field. As a conductive liquid flows through, an induced voltage appears at electrodes placed perpendicular to flow and magnetic field. This voltage is proportional to flow velocity and is used to compute the volumetric flow rate.
Which media are suitable for electromagnetic flowmeters?
Conductive liquids such as water, wastewater, chemical solutions, slurries or suspensions are suitable. Non-conductive fluids (e.g. many oils) as well as gases or vapors cannot be measured reliably with this principle.
What are the advantages of electromagnetic flowmeters?
MIDs operate without moving parts — no wear, no pressure drop. They measure independently of density, viscosity or temperature variations, and remain accurate even with solid content or aggressive chemicals present.
Which medium properties are required for proper measurement?
The fluid must have sufficient electrical conductivity. Also, the pipe must be completely filled (no air bubbles or gas inclusions) for a valid measurement.
Which industries and applications are typical for electromagnetic flowmeters?
They are widely used in water and wastewater treatment, chemical industries, food & beverage, paper & pulp, mining, utilities and industrial processes where conductive liquids must be measured.
How accurate are electromagnetic flowmeters?
Depending on sensor design and configuration, very good measurement accuracy and reproducibility are achievable. Variations in density or temperature have negligible effect when the device is correctly specified.
How do liner and electrode materials influence suitability?
For aggressive, abrasive or hygienic media, inner liner materials such as PTFE, special polymers or ceramics and corrosion-resistant electrode materials must be selected to ensure sensor longevity and measurement integrity.
How is commissioning and system integration handled?
After installation, the sensor is paired with a transmitter, which processes the induced signal and provides standardized output (e.g. 4–20 mA, digital). Many Siemens flowmeters offer automatic calibration upload, integrated diagnostics and compatibility with fieldbuses or DCS systems.
What are the limitations of electromagnetic flowmeters?
They only work with electrically conductive fluids, require a completely filled pipe, and are unsuitable for non-conductive media, gases or steam.
When is an electromagnetic flowmeter the optimal choice?
Whenever conductive liquids, possibly with solids or chemical load, have to be measured accurately — especially in water, wastewater, chemical, mining or industrial processes where reliability, low maintenance and robust operation are required.
