Humidity Sensors – precise RH/T measurement for HVAC, cleanrooms & process

Humidity sensors measure relative humidity (RH) and temperature, with options for dew point or water activity. Available as room/duct transmitters, process probes and in-line sensors (e.g., compressed air). Depending on model, they offer analog outputs, fieldbus and diagnostics (drift/status).

Key features: fast-response capacitive RH elements, interchangeable sensor modules, filter/heated caps, IP54–IP67, ATEX/IECEx options, hygienic design (CIP/SIP resistant) and optional factory/DAkkS calibration.

ICS Schneider Messtechnik supports selection, placement, calibration strategy, validation and IIoT integration with BMS/SCADA/cloud.

FAQ on Humidity Sensors

Answers on sensor technology, accuracy, installation, protection, interfaces, calibration and best practices.

Which sensing technology is used?

Predominantly capacitive polymer RH/T elements. For very dry gases use dew-point/trace-humidity sensors; chilled-mirror devices serve as lab references.

What accuracy is realistic?

Quality probes typically achieve ±1…2 %RH and ±0.2…0.3 °C in the nominal range. Installation, thermal equilibrium and airflow strongly influence results.

How does temperature affect RH?

RH is temperature-dependent. Keep sensor, medium and reference isothermal; avoid drafts, radiant heat and housing self-heating.

Which form factors are available?

  • Room/wall transmitters for buildings & cleanrooms
  • Duct probes with insertion tube
  • Process probes with guard/filter (also ATEX)
  • In-line dew-point sensors for compressed air/gases

Which filter/guard caps should I use?

VariantUse caseNotes
PTFE sinterDust, splashGood protection, low delay
Stainless meshHarsh/oil mistRobust; clean regularly
Heated capCondensation riskPrevents fogging; needs power
Chem-resistantAggressive gasesVerify material compatibility

How do I install sensors correctly?

In ducts, mount perpendicular to airflow with sufficient insertion depth, away from bends/dampers (observe straight runs). In rooms, place away from doors/heat sources at a representative height.

What matters for compressed-air/gas dew point?

Pressure dew point differs from atmospheric dew point. Use bypass sampling with a flow restrictor, add filters (particles/oil), and allow warm-up/regeneration.

Which outputs & interfaces are available?

CategoryExamplesApplication
Analog4–20 mA, 0–10 VPLC/controllers, long lines
DigitalModbus RTU/TCP, BACnet, IO-LinkMultiple values & diagnostics
NetworkEthernet/PoE, MQTT via gatewayCloud/SCADA/IIoT

How often should I recalibrate?

Rule of thumb: annually; semi-annually for QA-critical tasks. After shock/replacement, perform an interim check with salt solutions or a humidity generator.

Which calibration methods work best?

Saturated salt solutions (fixed points), controlled humidity generators/chambers, and chilled-mirror references. Always define a stability window (ΔRH/Δt).

How do I detect drift or contamination?

Increasing deviations at check points, slower response and more noise. Mitigation: clean per manufacturer guidance, recalibrate, or swap the sensor module.

How do I protect against condensation & chemicals?

Use heated/protective caps, chem-resistant filters, minimize exposure time, and shorten intervals under harsh conditions.

Are hygienic or Ex variants available?

Yes—hygienic designs with smooth surfaces and FDA-compliant seals, plus ATEX/IECEx certified probes/transmitters with suitable barriers.

How do I document compliantly?

Include as-found/as-left, point lists, traceability chain, ambient data (T/RH) and expanded uncertainty k=2; export PDF/CSV with optional audit trail/e-signature.

What common pitfalls should I avoid?

  • Wrong placement (drafts, radiant heat)
  • Missing/blocked filters
  • Temperature gradients between sensor & medium
  • Insufficient stabilization before reading/calibration

Do you help with design & validation?

Yes—we define measurement points, select the probe/interface, plan calibration intervals, provide certificates and integrate sensors with BMS/SCADA/IIoT.
