Digital Panel Meters for High AC Voltage and High AC Current
Digital panel meters for high AC voltage and high AC current are designed to measure and display AC signals that exceed typical low-voltage ranges. They process high AC voltages or currents — usually via external voltage or current transformers — and convert these inputs into standardized signals that can be displayed on a multi-digit LED display. With freely scalable indication, configurable units, optional analog outputs and relay limit monitoring, and front protection (e.g. IP65), they are suitable for demanding industrial applications where high AC values must be monitored reliably.
Questions & Answers
What applications are high-voltage/high-current AC panel meters used for?
They are used wherever elevated AC voltages or currents must be monitored — for example in medium-voltage systems (via suitable transformers), heavy-duty power distribution, large drive systems, generators, transformers, and industrial plants with high AC loads.
How are high AC voltages and currents measured?
Measurement is typically performed using external transformers: voltage transformers for high AC voltages and current transformers for large AC currents. These transformers provide a standardized secondary signal (e.g. 0–5 VAC, 0–1 A, 0–5 A), which the panel meter can safely process.
Which input signals are typically supported?
Depending on the model, standardized transformer output signals such as 0–5 VAC, 0–1 A or 0–5 A are supported. The device scales these signals to display the corresponding primary values — for example voltage in kV or current in A.
How is the measured value displayed?
The measured RMS value is shown on a multi-digit LED display. With adjustable scaling, units and decimal point, the displayed value can be configured to represent the correct physical unit directly (e.g. kV, A).
Is scaling and primary-side conversion possible?
Yes — by entering the transformer ratio, the meter can calculate and display the correct primary value (e.g. 1:1000 transformer ratio for high-voltage measurement).
Are analog outputs available?
Depending on the device, analog outputs such as 0/4–20 mA or 0–10 V may be provided. These outputs allow transmission of the measured and scaled values to PLCs, controllers or data loggers.
Are relay outputs available for limit monitoring?
Many models include one or two potential-free relays. These can be configured as under-, over- or window limits and can trigger alarms or switching actions when thresholds are exceeded.
What supply voltage does the meter require?
The supply voltage varies by model — common options include 24 VDC (galvanically isolated) or a universal AC supply such as 100–240 VAC.
How is the device configured?
Configuration is done via a front keypad. Typical settings include input type (voltage/current), transformer ratio, unit, scaling, decimal point, filter settings, and analog/relay output functions.
What display options are common?
Multi-digit LED displays in colors such as red, green or orange, often with adjustable brightness. Typical digit heights are around 10 mm or 14 mm for good readability in bright or distant viewing conditions.
How is stable display ensured when AC values fluctuate?
Digital filtering or averaging functions help smooth short-term fluctuations and provide a stable, reliable reading.
What measurement ranges can be covered?
Depending on the transformer specifications and device configuration, ranges from several hundred volts up into the kilovolt range can be monitored, as well as high AC currents on the primary side.
What panel cut-out sizes are typical?
Devices are designed for standard control-panel cutouts — e.g. 96×48 mm, 96×24 mm or similar sizes depending on model and display format.
Are these devices suitable for monitoring industrial high-voltage or high-current networks?
Yes — when used with properly rated transformers, these devices are well suited for monitoring high-voltage and high-current networks, provided installation and safety requirements are met.
