Gauge Process Fittings – Leak-tight, Secure, Service-Friendly
Gauge process fittings connect pressure gauges to the process reliably—available as straight, elbow and tee fittings, reducers, union/screw fittings, and compression/cutting-ring solutions. They ensure the correct thread standard, a medium- and temperature-appropriate seal, and a stable, low-vibration mechanical connection.
Available in zinc-plated carbon steel and stainless steel 304/316(L), for G 1/4 / G 1/2 (BSPP), 1/4″ / 1/2″ NPT, M20×1.5, as well as DIN 2353 tube fittings (L/S series) and JIC 37° (SAE J514). ICS Schneider Messtechnik can supply pre-assembled sets incl. valve, snubber/siphon, fitting and gauge—with EN 10204 3.1 on request.
FAQ on Gauge Process Fittings
Selection, standards, sealing concepts, pressure ratings, installation and best practices—at a glance.
Which fitting types are common?
| Type | Function | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Straight / elbow / tee | Direction/branch adaptation | Tight spaces, viewing position |
| Union / screw fitting | Quick separation for service | Calibration, device exchange |
| Compression / cutting ring (DIN 2353) | Metal-to-metal tube seal | Hydraulics/process, high strength |
| JIC 37° (SAE J514) | 37° flare cone seal | International, vibration-resistant |
| Adapter / reducer | Change thread/size | G↔NPT↔metric, port matching |
What thread standards and sealing principles are used?
| Thread | Standard | Sealing | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| G 1/4, G 1/2 (BSPP) | ISO 228 (parallel) | Flat gasket/O-ring at seat | Faces flat, burr-free |
| 1/4″, 1/2″ NPT | ASME B1.20.1 (taper) | PTFE tape or paste | Wrap in screw direction |
| M20×1.5 | ISO metric | Usually flat gasket | Verify matching seat |
| DIN 2353 | ISO 8434-1 | Metal (cutting ring) + O-ring (ED type) | Observe L/S series |
| JIC 37° | SAE J514 | Metallic 37° cone | Highly serviceable |
How do I choose the right pressure rating?
Size for max operating pressure + safety margin. For DIN 2353 tube fittings: use the L series for standard pressures, S series for higher pressures. Consider temperature, medium and wall thickness; comply with PED/ASME where applicable.
Carbon steel or stainless—what’s appropriate?
Zinc-plated steel for neutral media in standard environments. 316(L) for corrosive media/environments, food/pharma, or elevated temperatures. Select seals (PTFE, FKM, EPDM, FFKM) according to medium and temperature.
Do fittings affect measurement quality?
Long/narrow passages slightly increase response time and damp pulsations. For fast processes, choose short fittings with larger bores; optionally add a snubber.
Key installation tips
- Clean threads/cone faces; apply the correct sealing concept (BSPP/NPT/metric).
- Mount stress-free; avoid lever forces on the gauge.
- Use torque per manufacturer; for cutting rings perform correct pre-assembly.
- Align elbows/tees to the reading direction before final tightening.
How to pre-assemble cutting rings (DIN 2353) correctly?
- Cut tube square, deburr, clean.
- Slide nut and ring on; insert tube to stop in the body.
- Turn per datasheet for pre-assembly; inspect ring bite.
- Final assembly at the measuring point with reduced torque.
Which DIN 2353 sizes are common?
| Series | Tubing OD | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| L (Light) | 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 15 / 18 / 22 / 28 mm | General machinery/plant |
| S (Heavy) | 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 16 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 38 mm | Higher pressure/rough duty |
Typical mistakes—and how to avoid them
- Mixing thread standards → leakage / damage.
- Over-tightened NPT joints → cracks/distortion.
- No proper cutting-ring pre-assembly → ring slips, leaks.
- Too many adapter chains → dead space, vibration, load on instrument.
Can I combine fittings with other accessories?
Yes. Proven stack: Process → shut-off valve/gauge cock → fitting/adapter → optional snubber/siphon/cooling element → gauge/diaphragm seal.
Use in hazardous (Ex) areas?
Mechanical fittings are usually uncritical. With electrical components (contact gauges), observe the Ex approval of the complete assembly and ensure bonding.
Does ICS Schneider supply pre-assembled sets & documentation?
Yes—ready-to-install packages incl. valve, fitting and gauge; on request with EN 10204 3.1, pressure test and project-specific labeling.
