Handheld Temperature Instruments – mobile, precise & versatile

Handheld temperature meters are the flexible solution for service, maintenance, QA and validation—from HVAC/buildings to food/HACCP, pharma/labs, and machine & plant engineering.

Depending on the task they use RTD sensors (Pt100/Pt1000), thermocouples (Type K/J/T/N), or infrared (IR). Features like multi-channel, Min/Max/Hold, logging, alarms and interfaces (USB/Bluetooth/Modbus) simplify documentation and data transfer.

ICS Schneider Messtechnik supports sensor/instrument selection, calibration (ISO/DAkkS), validation, and HACCP/GMP-compliant documentation.

FAQ on Handheld Temperature Instruments

Answers on sensors, accuracy, probes, IR measurement, logging, calibration, HACCP/GMP and integration.

Which sensor types are supported?

SensorRange (typ.)AdvantagesUse
RTD (Pt100/Pt1000)−200…+600 °Cvery accurate, stableQA/lab, reference
Thermocouple (K/J/T/N)−200…+1 200 °Crobust, fastservice/process, high T
IR (pyrometer)−50…+1 000 °C (typ.)non-contact, fastmoving/delicate surfaces

How accurate are handhelds?

Typically ±0.1…0.3 K (RTD) or ±0.5…1 % of reading / ±1…2 K (TC/IR)—depending on instrument, sensor, calibration and ambient conditions.

What probe types are available?

ProbePropertiesTypical use
Immersionsealed, slimliquids, baths
Surfaceflat tipplates, pipes
Air/gasperforated sleeveroom/duct
Needle penetrationpointed, robustfood core temperature
Magnetic/clampquick to mountpipes/machine surfaces

IR or contact—what’s better?

IR is fast/non-contact but emissivity-dependent. Contact is robust and traceably more accurate with proper coupling. Often a combination is ideal.

How does response time affect results?

Small probe diameters and good thermal coupling (paste/contact pressure) shorten t63/t90. For IR, the D:S ratio and focus are key.

What does D:S (IR spot size) mean?

Distance-to-spot determines the spot size. The spot must be fully covered by the target, otherwise readings are biased.

Are multi-channel handhelds available?

Yes, 2–4 channels are common (e.g., 2×TC + 2×RTD). Running different probes in parallel supports comparison and validation.

Which functions are important for QA?

Min/Max/Hold, averaging, offset/adjustment, time stamp, alarms, and a logger with export (CSV/PDF).

How does data logging work?

Via internal memory or app/PC software. Typical intervals 1 s…60 min, export via USB/Bluetooth; optional cloud upload.

Food/HACCP—what should I consider?

Use fast penetration probes, smooth/easy-to-clean housings (IP rating), documentation with time/user, and calibration labels.

GMP/pharma—how to ensure valid measurements?

Select instruments with traceable calibration, tamper-proof reports, user/audit functions and a clear measurement chain.

How often should I calibrate?

Rule of thumb annually; for critical applications semi-annually or after shock/overheat. Store certificates in a revision-safe way.

Can I adjust offsets?

Many instruments allow a 1-point offset or multi-point adjustment. Document and seal changes (QA).

What IP ratings/form factors exist?

Handhelds typically IP54…IP67. Rubber guards, bumpers and hands-free mounts improve field usability.

Rechargeable or battery-powered?

Both exist. Check runtime, charge time, auto-off, and spare batteries for field work.

Typical sources of error?

  • Poor coupling → improve paste/contact pressure
  • Wrong ε (IR) → set emissivity, add matte reference spots
  • Heat bridges → insulate, avoid drafts
  • Wrong spot size → observe D:S

How do I link the handheld to software?

Via USB, Bluetooth or RS-485/Modbus. Export as CSV/PDF; integrate into SCADA/cloud via a gateway.

Are pre-configured sets useful?

Yes: instrument + matching probes (e.g., air/surface/penetration) + calibration saves time and prevents mis-purchases.

Do you support selection & validation?

Yes. We advise on instrument/probe, provide calibration certificates, help with IR setup (ε/D:S) and with logging/report configuration.

Can handhelds measure differential temperature (ΔT) or averaging?

Many multi-channel models offer ΔT between probes and statistical functions (mean/min/max). Useful for heat-exchanger checks, validation and trend analysis.
