Signal Simulators – precise sources for temperature, current, voltage & frequency
Signal simulators emulate industrial measurands such as RTD/PRT, thermocouples, 4–20 mA, mV/V, Ω and Hz/pulse for fast verification of transmitters, indicators & I/O cards, controllers and PLCs—in the field or the lab.
Depending on the device, models are available as temperature simulators (RTD/TC), loop/mA simulators, mV/V/Ω simulators or frequency/pulse generators. Options include 24 V loop power, ramp/step functions, offset/span, CJC, 2/3/4-wire, HART 250 Ω, logging, USB/Bluetooth and rugged IP ratings.
ICS Schneider Messtechnik helps with selection, test setups, uncertainty budgets and documentation—including optional factory/DAkkS certificates.
FAQ on Signal Simulators
Answers on applications, wiring, accuracy, RTD/TC, loop tests, safety, documentation and best practices.
What are simulators used for?
For functional checks and adjustment of measurement chains without process media: commissioning, troubleshooting, loop checks, linearity and limit testing.
What’s the difference between a simulator and a calibrator?
A simulator outputs signals (source). A calibrator can also measure, often document, and may include pressure/temperature modules.
Which signals can be simulated?
Category | Simulated | Typical use |
---|---|---|
Current | 0/4–20 mA (source/sink) | Transmitter / input card tests |
Voltage | mV/V | Amplifiers, indicators |
Resistance | Ω (RTD equivalent) | RTD inputs |
RTD | Pt100/500/1000, Ni100… (2/3/4-wire) | Temperature transmitters |
Thermocouple | Types K/J/T/N… with CJC | TC inputs/controllers |
Frequency | Hz/pulse, K-factor | Flow/RPM channels |
What does source vs. sink mean for 4–20 mA?
Source supplies current into the load (card input). Sink absorbs current from an externally powered loop. Many devices allow mode switching.
How do I simulate an RTD correctly (2/3/4-wire)?
Select the wire count on the simulator, set required bridges per manual, account for lead resistance, and prefer low input test current to minimize self-heating.
How does TC simulation with cold junction compensation work?
Select the TC type, enable CJC internally or specify an external reference temperature; maintain clean, polarity-correct connections with low contact resistance.
What accuracy is realistic?
Quality simulators achieve typically ±(0.015…0.05 % of reading + counts) for mA/V. RTD/TC specs are temperature- and type-dependent and include CJC effects.
Can a simulator supply 24 V loop power?
Many units provide loop power (24 V) including a switchable 250 Ω HART resistor—ideal for standalone loop tests.
What are ramp/step functions for?
0–100–0 % sweeps or 25 % steps speed up linearity, alarm and hysteresis checks and make documentation easier.
How do I wire a mA loop correctly?
Place the current source in series with the load (input/transmitter) and, if using HART, add 250 Ω. Observe polarity and avoid ground loops.
How do I select the right simulator?
By required signal types, accuracy, load capability, loop power, functions (ramp, CJC), interfaces, IP rating and battery life.
Which safety topics matter?
Respect maximum voltage/current, avoid shorts, use properly insulated leads, and assess Ex/ATEX areas separately.
How do I document my tests?
Capture setpoints/results, as-found/as-left, tolerance verdict and traceability chain; export CSV/PDF via companion software or a higher-level calibration system.
What affects measurement uncertainty?
Device specs, drift, resolution, environment (T/RH), lead/contact resistance, CJC error and load impedance. Report as k=2.
Can I test frequency/pulse inputs?
Yes—use frequency/pulse generators; set K-factor, pulse shape, level and duty cycle to match the input card.
Do you support selection & test procedures?
Yes—We define signal/accuracy requirements, recommend devices, prepare point plans, integrate software and supply factory/DAkkS certificates.
